Tri-Nations leaders South Africa have named Ruan Pienaar at full-back in place of Frans Steyn for Saturday's game with struggling Australia.

Schalk Burger starts on the bench in Perth, having completed an eight-week ban for eye-gouging in the second Test against the British and Irish Lions.

Full-back James O'Connor and flanker Rocky Elsom have both passed fitness tests and will start for the Wallabies.

But Stirling Mortlock, Nathan Sharpe and Berrick Barnes are all injured.

Mortlock, who will miss the rest of the tournament after picking up a knee injury in his side's narrow loss to New Zealand last Saturday, is replaced as skipper by flanker George Smith.

Ryan Cross comes into the side for Barnes but will start at outside centre to allow Adam Ashley-Cooper to play inside, while Mark Chisholm replaces Sharpe at lock after recovering from a dislocated wrist.

The Australian selectors have also made two unforced changes from last weekend's starting side as they seek their first win of this year's Tri-Nations.

Peter Hynes is named on the wing ahead of Drew Mitchell and prop Ben Alexander is selected at tight-head instead of Al Baxter.

The availability of O'Connor, who has shrugged off a leg injury, and Elsom, who has recovered from an ankle problem, is welcome news for a Wallabies team that is yet to win a match in this season's series.

Stormers flanker Burger, who was banned for gouging Lions winger Luke Fitzgerald in the first minute of the crucial second Test in June, replaces the injured Danie Rossouw.

However, it is the inclusion of Pienaar that will confound many, with Steyn starting all three of South Africa's Tri-Nations victories thus far.

Pienaar had been given his chance at fly-half during the 2-1 series defeat of the Lions, and the early part of the current Tri-Nations, but his failure with the boot saw him lose his place to the in-form Morne Steyn.

And Springboks coach Peter de Villiers said the decision to start Pienaar at full-back against Australia was made simply to keep all his players happy.

"Ruan is a brilliant player," he said. "I hope he will add more bite on attack. Frans Steyn has not let us down, he always pulled his weight, but it's important to keep the interest levels high of everyone in the squad.

"We are very organised at the moment, we don't want to become a fruit salad, so 15 will be Ruan's number and 10 will be Morne's number.

Asked whether Pienaar might switch to fly-half from time to time during the game, De Villiers said: "Ruan has been selected to play at full-back and that is where he will concentrate his energies.

"However, if the situation dictates, as it might, we have an option to make use of him at 10."

De Villiers is refusing to be complacent about his side's chances on Saturday, despite their position at the top of the Tri-Nations table.

"The Wallabies have had a few injury problems but we will not underestimate them in any way," he said. "They are playing at home, which is a great advantage and they remain a very good side."

The Springboks will be led by captain John Smit, who will win his 88th cap at the Subiaco Oval, while scrum-half Fourie du Preez will win his 50th international cap.

Australia: J O'Connor; L Turner, R Cross, A Ashley-Cooper, P Hynes; M Giteau, L Burgess; B Robinson, S Moore, B Alexander, J Horwill, M Chisolm, R Elsom, G Smith (captain), R Brown.

South Africa have stuck with their winning XV for Saturday's Tri-Nations game against Australia at Newlands.

The only change to the team that beat New Zealand 31-19 sees Ruan Pienaar replace Wynand Olivier on the bench.

Victor Matfield and Bakkies Botha will play together as a lock pairing for the 50th time in a Test.

Australia are also unchanged from the side which lost to the All Blacks on 18 July, although Peter Hynes is in for Phil Waugh among the replacements.

Stirling Mortlock's men were beaten 22-16 in Auckland but conceded just one try on that occasion and take on world champions South Africa having conceded only two in the four Tests they have played in 2009.

Their defensive solidity is sure to be tested by a Springbok side fresh from their first back-to-back victories over New Zealand since 1976, which followed a 2-1 home series victory against the British and Irish Lions.

Jean de Villiers is set to break De Wet Barry's record as the most capped Springbok centre when he lines up in midfield for the 40th time on the occasion of his 51st cap, having also played 11 Tests on the wing.

The world champions beat New Zealand 31-19 in Durban last weekend and lead the Tri-Nations table with eight points, having won both their games to date.

The All Blacks have played three and won one, while Australia lie third having lost their only game so far.

South Africa: F Steyn; JP Pietersen, J Fourie, J de Villiers, B Habana; M Steyn, F du Preez; T Mtawarira, B du Plessis, J Smit (capt), B Botha, V Matfield, H Brussow, J Smith, P Spies.

Morne Steyn replaces Ruan Pienaar at fly-half as South Africa make one change for Saturday's Tri-Nations rematch against New Zealand in Durban.

Pienaar twisted his ankle in the Boks' 28-19 win in Bloemfontein last weekend. Andries Bekker and Adrian Jacobs are on the bench again.

New Zealand make two changes, with scrum-half Jimmy Cowan replacing the dropped Brendon Leonard.

Owen Franks comes in for the injured Neemia Tialata at tight-head prop.

"The players looked good on Thursday and we've had a very positive week of training," said All Blacks coach Graham Henry.

"The guys are in good shape mentally and have enjoyed their time in Durban. But we'd be conning ourselves if we thought having a good week meant we can just turn up and win."

Springboks captain John Smit, who will be captaining the side for a world record 60th time, surpassing Australian George Gregan and Englishman Will Carling, said he fully expected a backlash from a wounded New Zealand.

To beat them once is great, to be able to do it back-to-back is a far greater challenge," he said.

"I think we can take it for granted that they were never going to be satisfied with their performance last week.

"There was always going to be a backlash and we are certainly going to face one on Saturday."

Steyn's introduction changes the options available to the Springboks because he is considered to be a kicking fly-half with a very accurate boot, whereas Pienaar is known more for his running and footballing ability.

Springbok team manager Arthob Petersen said Pienaar, who kicked poorly in the first Test in Bloemfontein, had been rested as a "precautionary measure" and was a "vital component" in the team.

South Africa coach Peter de Villiers said there was no point "crying about" Pienaar's injury, adding: "Morne is a very good player, he is a match winner and he has shown that with his franchise side, the Bulls."

Inside centre Jean de Villiers was thought to have injured his knee in Bloemfontein but the injury has now been put down to cramp and he is fit to win his 50th cap alongside wing Bryan Habana, who reaches the same milestone.

The All Blacks have called John Afoa onto the bench in place of Franks but Leonard, a less physical player than Cowan, drops out of the squad entirely.

"I feel for Brendon because he was given an opportunity and it didn't quite happen for him, partly because he reflected how the team was playing as a whole," added Henry.

"He will be disappointed but I believe he has a lot of ability and has a big future, he just needs more game time.

"Owen has shown he can stand up for himself. He's got an edge to him, he rates himself, which is very important at this level, and he'll be up for the contest. The bigger the challenge, the more excited he gets."

Full-back Mils Muliaina, centre Ma'a Nonu and locks Brad Thorn and Isaac Ross are the only players to have played in all five of the All Blacks' previous Tests this year.

South Africa: F Steyn; Pietersen, Fourie, De Villiers, Habana; M Steyn, Du Preez; Mtawarira, B du Plessis, Smit (capt), Botha, Matfield, Brussow, Smith, Spies.
Replacements: Ralepelle, Jannie du Plessis, Bekker, Rossouw, Januarie, Jacobs, Olivier.

New Zealand: Muliaina; Rokocoko, Smith, Nonu, Sivivatu; Donald, Cowan; Woodcock, Hore, Franks, Thorn, Ross, Kaino, McCaw, So'oialo.
Replacements: Mealamu, Afoa, Eaton, Read, Weepu, McAlister, Jane.

New Zealand powerhouse Joe Rokocoko will take his place on the right wing for Saturday's Tri-Nations clash against world champions South Africa.

Rokocoko replaces benched Cory Jane but there is no place for Jimmy Cowan with Brendon Leonard in at scrum-half.

The Springboks have recalled JP Pietersen, Bryan Habana and Jean de Villiers for their first game.

They are three of six changes made to the starting XV that lost 28-9 to the British and Irish Lions this month.

Ruan Pienaar plays at fly-half in Bloemfontein instead of Morne Steyn, hero of the second Test against the Lions, who drops to the bench.

Pierre Spies and Bakkies Botha are also in the South Africa team with Steyn, Wynand Olivier and Ryan Kankowski named as replacements.

Odwa Ndungane, Jongi Nokwe, Johann Muller are left out.

"It was a difficult decision to choose between Ruan and Morne, you always have difficult decisions as a coach," said coach Peter de Villiers.

"In rugby, you can't look too far ahead, so I will say that if injury hits, we will consider starting Steyn at fly-half."

Centre Adrian Jacobs failed to recover from a torn groin muscle and is replaced by Jaque Fourie, who resumes his midfield partnership with Jean de Villiers.

"It was a big setback to lose Adi, as he has been in our plans for a long time," added De Villiers.

"But with Jaque coming in, our plans won't change that much. They are very similar players and we will look to play a similar style of rugby with Jaque now at number 13."

Schalk Burger is still serving his ban for eye-gouging, leaving Heinrich Brussow to continue as openside flanker.

South Africa are hoping to beat New Zealand in Bloemfontein for the first time, having lost 15-9 to the All Blacks in 1976 and drawing 11-11 in 1960.

New Zealand hooker Keven Mealamu, captain Richie McCaw, Conrad Smith and Isaac Ross all came through light training on Monday after sustaining injuries in Saturday's win over Australia.

McCaw, Smith and Ross make the starting XV with Mealamu, who is set to be the seventh-most capped player, named as a replacement.

Coach Graham Henry told the All Blacks website: "We were really happy with the effort and the progress made against Australia and we are looking for continued improvement in the first Test against South Africa.

"It will be a massive challenge against our old foes."

New Zealand beat Australia 22-16 in the opening Tri-Nations match last weekend.

South Africa: Steyn, Pietersen, Fourie, De Villiers, Habana, Pienaar, Du Preez; Pierre Spies, Smith, Brussow, Matfield, Botha, Smit (cpt), Du Plessis, Mtawarira.
